Armavir region bears the name of the first capital of Armenia.
Armavir is Armenia’s Cradle of Civilization; home to some of the oldest cities in the Near East, the world’s oldest known forging of bronze, and its first Christian state.
It is for its Christian history that the Armavir region is most famous for locals and Diaspora Armenians, who make pilgrimages to Armenia as much to worship at the ca. 303 cathedral of Echmiadzin as to visit their homeland.
Yerevan-Gyumri highway and Yerevan-Tbilisi railway of republican importance run through the territory of the region.
Economy
Armavir region is primarily agricultural orientation, although it had a powerful industry. The orchards of grape, apricot, peach, plum and plant-growing areas has the great importance in the region.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant and "Zvartnots" airport also is in Armavir region.
There are agricultural small and medium farms, agricultural products processing companies - "MAP", "Sardarapat" and Ejmiatsin's canned food factories, "Armavir farmers" CJSC, "Alfa-Vin" LLC, "Milaqs Group" CJSC, "Armavir machine-tool factory" OJSC and other companies. There are "Armavir", "Vardan" and "Talin" small hydro power plants.
The fish farms also are developed.
Tourist Attractions
The region is rich in historical and cultural values - Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, Zvartnots and Metsamor archaeological museums, Armenia State Ethnographic Museum in Sardarapat, Zvartnots Temple, Bagaran old pagan center, "Musaler" and Sardarapat" complexes, Metsamor's five thousand years metal foundry unique monument. Urartian Argishtikhinili ruins and Armenian anciant capital Armavir has historical big values and Yervandashat ruins - the last capital of the Yervanduni kingdom.
Armavir is featured in Armenia’s Freedom Struggle after WWI, and is home of the battle that insured the country’s independence, at Sardarapat.
